Biographie

I completed my BA at the University of Cape Town and worked a few years in Zimbabwe where the harsh economic crisis brought hardship, as coping with the relentless rise in prices and shortage of basic commodities was difficult. I was able to apply insights from my training in Anthropology to understand how the situation developed and impacted on people’s lives sturring up my ambition and a need to act. Seeing the dire health situation and the necessity for joint action and informed decision-making, I wanted to study further and learn how to do just that. I joined a research programme between the University of Zimbabwe and the University of Oslo and through this affiliation received a scholarship from the University of Oslo to take part in their Summer School in International Community Health. Following this first visit to Europe, I returned to do a Masters in Health and Welfare and have stayed on to pursue a PhD in Globalisation, the EU and Multilateralism, as a recipient of two consecutive Erasmus Mundus Scholarships awarded by the European Commission. My affiliation with the Faculty of Political Science at the ULB has exposed me to a vibrant international group of scholars, providing opportunities to exchange ideas and develop academic skills.

Présentation des recherches

My research highlights the organizational design of two prominent advisory committees dealing with immunization (WHO/SAGE) and bioethics (UNESCO/IBC). Their purpose is to steer policies towards resolving issues of global concern and aim to bring clarity to the various options governments should take while considering the needs on the ground. These advisory committees call on expertise and different knowledge systems with the aim of creating a platform for the evaluation and discussion of the issues at hand. Recent work in Science and Technology Studies looks at the interactions between science, technology and policy as a point of interest, finding that the relationships are complex and knowledge about how they interact is thin. This research adds to this body of work with a specific emphasis on health issues.
